Waste and Recycling Collection

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if I am in Salt Lake County's sanitation district?

If you live anywhere in the unincorporated areas of the county or in the cities of Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Taylorsville, Herriman, and parts of Murray, we are your garbage and recycle collectors.

I just moved in, how do I get garbage and recycle cans?

The cans are transferred to your name when you close on your home. There is no need to cancel your service when you move out or call to set up the service when you move in. If there is a second can at your new residence please call to cancel it. The charge for a second can is $15 per month.

I am building or moving into a new home. How do I set up my garbage service?

Call us when you have your occupancy permit to establish your service: 385-468-6325. We will deliver one black refuse can and one blue recycle can.

How am I billed for garbage and recycle collection?

You are charged $12.75 per month (effective January 1, 2012) for your garbage can. Your recycle can is free. The fee is collected annually when you pay your property taxes. Your property taxes do not pay for sanitation services.

How do I get my can repaired?

Call us at 385-468-6325 or send an email for a repair or replacement.

Can I get additional cans?

Second or additional black refuse cans are available for a $15 per month fee. There is no charge for additional recycle cans.

Is my garbage picked up on a holiday?

We pick up every holiday except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. If your garbage or recycle pickup day falls on one of these holidays or the day after your cans will be picked up one day later including Saturday.

My can did not get picked up today. When will it be dumped?

Make sure your can is out by 7:00 am. If we missed your can call us at 385-468-6325. If you put your can out after we collected on your street we will pick it up at your next scheduled collection say.

Can I choose not to have my garbage picked up by Salt Lake County?

If you live in the Sanitation District we are your waste collection providers. You will be charged the $12.75 monthly fee (effective January 1, 2012) even if you do not use the services.

I can’t find my home in your service area. Who picks up my garbage?

Our service area map (324KB pdf) shows the District boundaries. If you live in any city in Salt Lake County other than Taylorsville, Herriman, Holladay, or Cottonwood Heights, your garbage collection is provided by your city. We collect garbage from some parts of Murray City.

I have limited mobility. Can I get help with my weekly garbage collection?

Yes. We provide assistance to any resident who needs help getting their cans to the curb. There is no charge for the service. Call us at 385-468-6325.

I live in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Where do I take my garbage and recycling?

Canyon residents use containers (dumpsters) located at Silver Fork, Cardiff Fork, and on the Brighton loop.

I live on a private road. How do I get my garbage picked up?

Residents on private roads (roads that are not installed or maintained for public use) may be eligible for curbside garbage pickup or use a container (dumpster) for the entire road. Your road must meet minimum requirements. Please review the Private road request for service (60kb pdf) then call to set up a time for us to look at your road: 385-468-6325.

What can I put in my blue recycling can?

Download and print the complete recycling guide (30kb pdf) then check our Recycling Resources page for lists of recylable material and locations for it.

Do I need to wash containers and cans before recycling them?

No. All containers must be empty but there is no need to rinse them unless there is a lot of food or material stuck in the container.

Does all the material I put in my recycling can actually get recycled?

Yes, as long as it is a recyclable item. None of the recyclable material we collect from you ever ends up in the landfill. Our recycled material is very clean and valuable thanks to your participation.

Why can't I put glass in my blue can?

Currently glass is not available through curbside collection due to the lack of a market for the material; however, we provide three central drop off locations for glass recycling.  The contaners are located at: Upper District Park (3800 S Wasatch Blvd), Taylorsville Park parking lot (1628 W 4800 S) and the paved lot south of the Holladay City Offices (4580 S 2300 E).

Does Salt Lake County offer green-waste collection?

Currently we do not collect green waste--grass clippings, yard waste, kitchen scraps--separately from garbage. We are looking at curbside collection of green waste but need to research the best way to collect it. Purchasing new trucks and putting more diesel-fueled equipment on the road may not make sense economically or environmentally. If you have a lot of green waste, try composting at home or rent on of our residential trailers.

What if it is raining or snowing on my area clean-up day or I miss our day?

We will give you as much notice as possible but will pick up rain or shine. If you miss your day you can rent a trailer to dispose of  green waste.

How long can I keep a trailer?

You have the trailer for four days. Deliveries and pickups are on the Trailer page

Can I dump the trailer myself?

No. We will deliver and pick up the trailer. A $100 fee is charged if you move the trailer.
